Cetacean monitoring using gliders - Second phase, July 2020
Date
04/07/2020
The monitoring of cetaceans in the Cretan Sea continues during the summer mission of the glider. The autonomous acoustic sensor has been re-attached on the vehicle in the framework of the collaboration with the University of St. Andrews in the ΥΠΑΚΟUΕ project. The underwater glider is recording temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen in vertical profiles up to 1000 m of the water column. In addition, passive acoustic data are recorded for the detection and monitoring of different species of cetaceans with different depth preferences and the recording of ambient noise in the area. The glider was deployed on July 3rd to start the mission, which is expected to last about 35 days.
